The number of portions a cake will yield depends on the size of the serving - a small portion (1" x 1" finger) can be served with tea or coffee after the meal, or if you wish to give a more generous serving, for dessert or if the cakes are sponge then 2" x 1" is suggested. Cakes are baked 3" tall before filling and covering, making the finished cake approximately 4" deep. The table below gives an approximate amount of servings from different sized cakes.

If your chosen style of cake does not serve as many portions as you require, you may wish to have extra cutting cakes made. These are baked and iced to the same exacting standards as your tiered cake; the only difference is that they will not be decorated, therefore costing less than a decorated cake.
Equally, if you do not require as much cake as your chosen design would provide, the inclusion of one or more faux tiers will ensure an impressive display without the leftover cake!
